Vol. 377 No. 9

Written Answers. - National Auditing.

75.

asked the Minister for Finance the progress made in his view of the law concerning national auditing; and when he expects to announce his decision thereon.

My Department recently completed a detailed study of the role of the Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG). This study covered the legislation relating to the C&AG, the development of his role over the years and the possibility of expanding his role into the areas of economy, efficiency and effectiveness. The study also looked at developments in national auditing in other countries. The results of the study are now being considered but before any proposals are finalised consultation will be required with a number of interested parties.

The Committee of Public Accounts recently established an Advisory Group on Public Financial Accountability which is also considering the role of the C&AG. An interdepartmental committee chaired by the Department of the Environment is reviewing the Local Government Audit Service. The outcome of these reviews will be taken into account before any final decision is taken on the future role of the C&AG. I understand that both these reviews are expected to be completed this spring and I will announce decisions on any proposals for change as soon as possible thereafter.
