Vol. 378 No. 2

Written Answers. - Legal Services Review Committee.

24.

asked the Minister for Justice when it is intended to establish the promised Legal Services Review Committee to oversee the provision of legal services and to make ongoing recommendations to the Government and to the professional bodies in such areas as the provision of criminal and civil legal aid; if he will outline the terms of reference to be given to the Committee; the likely composition of the Committee; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Presumably the Deputy is referring to the proposal contained in the Fianna Fáil election manifesto to establish a Legal Services Review Commission.

As I have explained previously to the House, since almost all of the matters envisaged as coming within the scope of a Legal Services Review Commission are being examined in the course of a current study of the legal profession being carried out by the Restrictive Practices Commission, I intend to await the outcome of that study before giving further consideration to the proposal.
