Vol. 378 No. 4

Written Answers. - Sale of Crop Pesticide.

17.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a crop pesticide called Temik, which has been banned in a number of states in the United States following allegations that it can affect the human immune system, is on sale in this country; if he will consider banning its sale here; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Having reviewed reports on a number of studies carried out, the US Federal Environmental Protection Agency concluded in November 1986 that Aldicarb, the active ingredient in Temik 10 G, was non immuno-toxic i.e. does not suppress the immune system. The agency confirmed that pesticides containing Aldicarb were legally available in all states, although some may place certain restrictions on its use to avoid, in particular, contaminating water supplies.

On the basis of the information available at this time it is reasonable to conclude that Temik 10 G does not pose a risk to health or safety when used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and good farm practice.

Temik 10 G is one of 2,000 pesticides on sale in Ireland and my Department conducts a systematic examination of these under the European Communities (Classification, Packaging and Labelling of Pesticides) Regulations, 1985. A priority list for examination has been drawn up and Aldicarb is one of these due to be examined during 1988. The regulations include provision for banning or imposing special conditions on sale and/or use where warranted.
