Vol. 378 No. 4

Written Answers. - Supervision of Coursing Meetings.

20.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the procedures for the monitoring of the release of hares following coursing meetings; if he has satisfied himself that these procedures are being fully carried out; the amount of money paid by his Department in lieu of released hares in 1986-87; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Following coursing meetings, hares are released under the personal supervision of the control steward who is an employee of the Irish Coursing Club.

I am at all times concerned to ensure that the board and the Irish Coursing Club maintain proper supervision of coursing meetings and that they take steps to see that those responsible for the organisation and conduct of meetings comply fully with the law. I am satisfied that both bodies make every effort to ensure that meetings are conducted in such a way as to avoid abuses. My Department make no payments in lieu of released hares.
