asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if the authorities in Ireland have been asked to enforce EC competition policy by means of investigations, adjudications or recovery of penalties; and if so, if he will make a statement on the matter.

The office of the Director of Consumer Affairs and Fair Trade maintains liaison with the EC Commission by assisting officials of the Competition Directorate who visit Ireland to carry out investigations in the competition policy area. The office has assisted in a number of such investigations. The office of the Director of Consumer Affairs and Fair Trade has not been involved in adjudications or recovery of penalties.
