Comprehensive documentary or other administrative procedures relating to the movement of persons into and out of the State would be necessary in order to determine the actual numbers of inward and outward migrants in any period.
As such procedures are not in force the only reliable estimates of migration flows are those for net migration (i.e. the difference between the inward and outward flows) between successive censuses of population. Estimates prepared on this basis for individual counties must of necessity reflect movements into and from other counties as well as movements into and out of the State.
In the 1981-1986 intercensal period estimated net outward migration for each county in Connacht, including the effect of inter-county flows, was as follows:
