Vol. 378 No. 6

Written Answers. - Connacht Emigration.

68.

asked the Taoiseach the estimated number of people who have emigrated from each county in Connacht for each of the past three years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Comprehensive documentary or other administrative procedures relating to the movement of persons into and out of the State would be necessary in order to determine the actual numbers of inward and outward migrants in any period.

As such procedures are not in force the only reliable estimates of migration flows are those for net migration (i.e. the difference between the inward and outward flows) between successive censuses of population. Estimates prepared on this basis for individual counties must of necessity reflect movements into and from other counties as well as movements into and out of the State.

In the 1981-1986 intercensal period estimated net outward migration for each county in Connacht, including the effect of inter-county flows, was as follows:

Males

Females

Total

Galway

1,184

267

1,451

Leitrim

Corresponding estimates of net migration are not available for counties on an annual basis.
