Vol. 378 No. 7

Written Answers. - Irish Language.

63.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if there is any special recognition of the Irish language within the context of the Anglo-Irish Agreement; and if he will bring to the notice of the conference the disrespectful treatment of the language by British broadcasting companies.

The Anglo-Irish Agreement states that the intergovernmental conference will concern itself with measures to recognise and accommodate the rights and identities of the two traditions in Northern Ireland. Under this heading are included measures to foster the cultural heritage of both traditions. The British Government have recognised that the Irish language is part of this cultural heritage and issues relating to it form part of the ongoing work of the conference and the secretariat.

On the question of the alleged treatment of the Irish language by certain sections of the British media, if the Deputy wishes to bring examples of what he has in mind to my attention I will have them investigated with a view to considering what action may be necessary.
