asked the Minister for the Marine the procedures which are open to him to resolve the difficulties that have arisen for some of our traditional draft-net fishermen in our estuaries and rivers since the amendment of the definition of a fixed engine.

The amendment to the definition of a fixed engine provided for in the Fisheries (Amendment) Act, 1987, was of a technical nature designed to reconcile legislation with my Departments position in relation to salmon conservation. The new definition states what was considered to be the position prior to a Supreme Court judgment.
Further legislation would be required in order to amend the existing definition. I am, however, satisfied that no such amendment is warranted at this time.
