Written Answers. - Motor Cycle Accidents.

73.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number of fatal accidents involving motor cycles for the year ended 31 December 1987; the figures for the previous four years; and the average age of victims.

No detailed breakdown of road accident statistics for 1987 is available to date. This information will be contained in the annual report entitled "Road Accident Facts" which will be published towards the end of this year.

Motor cycles were involved in 58 fatal accidents in 1986, 53 in 1985, 70 in 1984 and 72 in 1983. These accidents resulted in the deaths of 50 motor cyclists in each of the years 1986 and 1985, 59 in 1984 and 61 in 1983.

The precise average age of motor cyclist victims of fatal road accidents is not available. However, such victims are predominantly in the 16 to 25 year old age group.
