asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline for the years 1983 to 1986 inclusive the amount of money which was raised by the State in respect of the sale of stolen goods which were unclaimed and which were in the possession of the Garda; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The information sought by the Deputy is as follows: 1983, £23,945; 1984, £26,055; 1985, £36,910; 1986, £34,790.

Under section 58 of the Dublin Police Act, 1842, and section 9 of the Constabulary (Ireland) Act, 1874, as adapted, the Garda are empowered to sell property believed to have been stolen, where the property have been in Garda possession for 12 calendar months without being claimed by the owner. In accordance with the provisions of those Acts, the proceeds are paid into the Exchequer as appropriations in aid of the Garda Síochána Vote.
