Written Answers. - Sea Rescue.
The Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC) at Shannon Airport is responsible for search and rescue operations within our region of responsibility. The centre receives and disseminates information relating to marine distress situations and co-ordinates the activities of the various rescue units and services at its disposal, such as the RNLI, the Irish Army Air Corps, the Irish Naval Service, the Coast Radio Stations, the Coast Life Saving Service etc.
The following table shows the number of major marine search and rescue incidents in the years 1980 to 1987 inclusive, together with the number of occasions on which RNLI lifeboats were launched and the number of occasions on which contact was made with light-house keepers in the course of search and rescue operations.
