Vol. 379 No. 1

Written Answers. - Travelling Community Statistics.

150.

asked the Minister for the Environment (a) the total number of the travelling community in the State (b) the number of travelling families housed so far (c) the number of travelling families living in official serviced sites and (d) the number of travelling families still to be settled.

Statistics on the accommodation used by travellers are obtained from the annual count of travelling families. Details of family numbers are not included in the count. The information detailed below, which was compiled from the November, 1987 count, covers, therefore the number of families only:

The total number of travelling families in the State

2,967

*The number of travelling families housed

1,646

The number of travelling families living in official serviced sites

342

The number of travelling families still to be settled

979

*This category excludes an unknown number of families which were housed as travellers but who no longer wish to be identified as travellers. To this extent the total of 1,646 is an underestimation of the number of travellers housed over the years.
