Vol. 379 No. 1

Written Answers. - Discrimination Against Travellers.

170.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to frequent acts of discrimination against travelling people especially by supermarket managers, hoteliers, dance hall proprietors and publicans who refuse access to all identifiable travellers; if he will take early steps to introduce legislation to deal with this problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The question of legislation to deal with discrimination of this kind will be a matter for consideration by the interdepartmental committee which has been established under the aegis of the Attorney General to consider the implications of the ratification by Ireland of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination.

Meanwhile, the Committee to Monitor the Implementation of Government Policy on Travelling People, which is under my aegis, has informed me that it has established a sub-committee to examine ways of lessening discrimination against travellers by a campaign of public information and education aimed at changing the negative attitudes of people towards travellers.
