Vol. 379 No. 1

Written Answers. - Injection Damage Claim.

56.

asked the Minister for Health if he will review the decision not to award compensation in respect of physical and mental damage caused to a person (details supplied) in County Galway following three-in-one injections as an infant.

Persons who, it was claimed, were permanently damaged by whooping cough vaccination were examined by the Independent Expert Medical Group on Whooping Cough Vaccination which is composed of three medical experts.

The expert group examined the person and also all the relevant medical records on the case and consulted those doctors, including the family doctor, who had a knowledge of the case, before making their decision. Having carried out this comprehensive examination the group concluded that this person's disability was not caused by whooping cough vaccination.

Agreed procedures were set down in 1982, for the initiation of individual case reviews, by the Expert Medical Group on Whooping Cough Vaccination. The first step required involves the submission of any new and relevant evidence which would justify the case being reopened. In the specific case in question, the individual's parents have been asked to submit any new evidence which would justify a review of the case. To date no such evidence has been submitted.

In the circumstances, I do not feel it is possible to pursue the matter further until the relevant evidence is submitted.
