Vol. 379 No. 3

Written Answers. - Third Level Institutions.

135.

asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has for the fuller utilisation of all third level institutions in order to provide many thousands more places for Irish students over the next ten years.

I would refer the Deputy to the detailed reply on this matter which I gave to Question No. 66 on Thursday, 3 November 1987. In that reply I indicated that the increased demand for student places will be met by educational institutions examining critically every area of expenditure with a view to effecting economies and making the best use of resources so that the third level system will become more efficient, more costeffective and more productive. I also gave details of studies to be carried out to examine ways by which additional students could be accommodated at no extra cost by reducing the length of courses as well as details about an inter-departmental committee who will examine, inter alia, the provision of third level places and the rationalisation of third level departments and institutions.
