Vol. 379 No. 3

Written Answers. - Gun Licence Applicant.

52.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will make a statement regarding the application for a gun licence by a person (details supplied) in Dublin 24; and if approval will be given for this application having regard to the fact that the applicant concerned is, and always has been, of outstanding good character and responsibility.

The discretion to grant a firearm certificate is vested by law in the Superintendent of the Garda Síochána for the district in which the applicant resides. Before granting a certificate a Superintendent must be satisfied that certain prescribed conditions are fulfilled.

The Superintendent in this case was not prepared to grant a certificate to the person in question and I am satisfied that his decision was taken in the bona fide exercise of his statutory discretion.
