Vol. 379 No. 3

Written Answers. - Growth Promoters in Beef Production.

69.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food having regard to the recent reaffirmation by the European Council of Ministers of the ban on the use of growth promoters in beef production (a) if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the ban is not strictly enforced in all European countries (b) the European countries, if any, which are ignoring the ban and (c) if Irish hormone-free beef is receiving full recognition on the European markets; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I understand that the ban on the use of growth promoters in beef production is being applied in all member states.

The adoption of the ban on hormones in Ireland clearly enhances Ireland's image as a producer of good quality residue free food and also ensures continued access to all Community countries. It dispenses with the need for separate certification in relation to hormones and affords highest recognition to our produce in the European Community market.
