Vol. 379 No. 4

Written Answers. - Exclusion Orders.

15.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the number of exclusion orders which have been made against Irish citizens under the Prevention of Terrorism Act in Great Britain; whether all these exclusion orders remain in force; if there is a review against them in progress; and whether any charges against those excluded have ever been brought.

Since the enactment of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, a total of 350 Irish people have been excluded from Great Britain. The latest published statistics relating to exclusion orders reveal that at the end of 1987 112 persons were subject to an exclusion order. A large majority of those excluded were removed to Northern Ireland.

Under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (1984) an exclusion order expires at the end of a period of three years. Exclusion orders can be renewed after the expiry of the three year period. Under the Act a person served with an exclusion order can appeal the order to the Home Secretary within a specified period.

In the period 22 March 1984 to 31 December 1987 a total of eight people were charged with failure to comply with an exclusion order.
