Vol. 379 No. 4

Written Answers. - Tax Amnesty.

45.

asked the Minister for Finance if the tax amnesty announced in the budget will be available to the many persons who have reached settlements with the Collector General but who have not made final payments before budget day, 27 January 1988.

The terms of the incentive to clear tax arrears are available to taxpayers who reached agreements with the Collector-General prior to budget day, 27 January 1988 for the payment of arrears of tax and interest by instalment. The waiver of interest in accordance with the incentive arrangements will, of course, only apply to the interest content of such agreements unpaid on budget day. Interest payments made prior to that day will not be reopened. To qualify for the waiver of unpaid interest taxpayers must bring all their outstanding tax payments up to date and meet the other conditions of the incentive as regards the timing of payments etc.

Persons with formal agreements with the Collector-General to pay arrears by instalment have been individually advised as to how the incentive arrangements may apply to them.

I am arranging to have a leaflet giving full details of the scheme made available in the Library.
