Vol. 379 No. 6

Written Answers. - Construction of Motorways.

212.

asked the Minister for the Environment if, in relation to (a) the southern cross motorway, (b) the western parkway and (c) the northern cross motorway, he will give details of progress to date since the construction of each of these sections; when work will commence on each of them; and when work is likely to be completed.

The position relating to each element of the Dublin ring road is as follows:

1. Tallaght Road-Lucan Road. Construction work started last year on two bridges (over the railway and canal). Work commenced last month on the main contract. It is envisaged that work will be completed in 1990.

2. Lucan Road-Navan Road. Work on this element, which is being financed by the private sector, commenced in January 1988. It is envisaged that work will also be completed in 1990.

3. Lucan Road Interchange. On 15 February 1988 Dublin County Council submitted to my Department for approval revised draft contract documents for an interchange to connect the above elements of the Dublin ring road. These draft contract documents are under examination in the Department at present. Work on this separate contract is expected to commence later this year and to be completed towards the end of 1989.

4. Southern Cross and Northern Cross Routes. Motorway schemes under the Local Government (Roads and Motorways) Act, 1974, are being prepared by Dublin County Council and will be submitted to my Department for approval in due course. The timing of the construction of these schemes is being considered in the context of the preparation of the proposed blueprint for road development.
