Vol. 379 No. 7

Written Answers. - Air Passenger Protection Smoke Hoods.

20.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if it is a mandatory requirement for Irish airlines to carry passenger protection smoke hoods; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The carriage of smoke hoods is not mandatory on Irish registered aircraft. A suitable smoke hood has not as yet been developed. However, States which are to the forefront in aeronautical design and manufacturing activity have been engaged on research in this area and my Department are keeping in touch with developments. I might mention that measures have been taken to minimise the hazard of smoke in aircraft cabins by, for example, requiring the use of fire blocking material in passenger seats and the marking of emergency escape paths.

I can assure the Deputy that developments on all aspects of passenger safety are monitored continuously by my Department with a view to ensuring the safety of passengers flying on Irish registered aircraft.
