Vol. 379 No. 8

Written Answers. - Royal Canal Expenditure.

42.

asked the Minister for Finance the total amount of moneys to be spent on the Royal Canal, County Kildare, in the current year; the extent to which these moneys will be spent in the Leixlip-Maynooth-Kilcock-Enfield areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

An allocation of £1,589,000 is provided in 1987 under Subhead H of the Vote for Public Works and Buildings for the maintenance of the Royal and Grand Canals, including the Barrow navigation. This provision will be spent throughout the entire canal system as maintenance needs dictate. It is not possible to give separate details of expenditure in the Leixlip-Maynooth-Kilcock-Enfield areas, but the Deputy may be assured that it is intended to continue the work of restoring the canal in these areas, which is at present being carried out by the Royal Canal Amenity Group and the Office of Public Works.

43.

asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the urgent need to approve plans for a boat-slip at Maynooth harbour, County Kildare, on the Royal Canal; if he will undertake to grant immediate approval in order that the necessary works can be undertaken on time for opening on 19 June 1988; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A sketch plan for a proposed boat-slip at Maynooth harbour has been submitted to the Commissioners of Public Works by the Royal Canal Amenity Group and, having examined it, the commissioners' structural engineers are preparing a detailed drawing of the boat-slip which will be furnished to the Royal Canal Amenity Group as soon as possible.
