Vol. 379 No. 10

Written Answers. - Manufacturing Investment.

32.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will make a statement giving the Government's projection for growth in manufacturing investment in Ireland.

Investment in manufacturing industry is now at its highest level of activity since 1984. In 1987 the volume of output and exports increased by 10 per cent and 14 per cent respectively, while investment in manufacturing industry assisted by the IDA grew by 14 per cent. While it is difficult to speculate about the precise levels of future investment because of the many variables involved, I would expect grant-assisted manufacturing investment to increase over the period 1988 to 1990 in line with the increased job creation targets set out in the Programme for National Recovery.
