Vol. 379 No. 11

Written Answers. - Energy Costs to Industry.

36.

asked the Minister for Energy the proposals he has for the reduction of energy costs to industry.

I take every opportunity to impress upon the energy agencies associated with my Department the need to keep prices as low as possible. I refer the Deputy to the details I gave on this area generally, on 16 February 1988 in a written reply.

A recent study has shown that gas prices to industry are among the lowest in Western Europe. As regards the activities of the INPC and Whitegate refinery, the House will be aware of certain negotiations which are in train in regard to the improvement of their performance. The purpose of the study which I hope to commission soon on the affairs of Bord na Móna will be to bring about higher efficiency and lower prices in that organisation.

As to the cost of petroleum products and coal supplied by the private sector I would point out that price control in respect of these products is a matter for the Minister for Industry and Commerce.
