Vol. 379 No. 11

Written Answers. - Prisoners' Remission Rates

68.

asked the Minister for Justice when an updated copy of the Rules for the Government of Prisons will be published to take account of the number of High Court decisions ruling that different remission rates for male and female prisoners is unconstitutional; if he will outline his Department's policy and practice in relation to remission rates for male and female prisoners; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In practice all offenders serving sentences of longer than one month are regarded as entitled to full remission of one-quarter of the total sentence unless all or part of it is forfeited as a consequence of breaches of prison discipline.

It would be the intention in any general revision of the prison rules to reflect existing practice but, given other demands on existing resources, I cannot say when such a revision may take place.
