Vol. 380 No. 1

Written Answers. - European Currency Units.

40.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has any plans to make the use of the European currency units more widespread in Ireland between now and 1992, for example by (a) encouraging exports and imports in European currency units (b) asking companies to publish their accounts in European currency units and (c) publishing Government notices in European currency units.

Discussions are in progress at EC level on the further development of the European Monetary System. The greater use of the European currency unit is likely to be determined in the context of such discussions but I cannot give any timescale for possible changes. There are no specific plans at this time for the use of these units in the circumstances outlined in the Deputy's question.
