Vol. 380 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway Bridge Proposal.

9.

asked the Minister for the Environment if the Government have made application to the EC for funds to erect a bridge across Lough Corrib from Kilbeg to Knockferry in County Galway; and if such an application has not been made, if there are any plans to apply for funds.

The development of this proposal, which would involve the connection of two county roads, is a matter for the local authority, Galway County Council. I understand that the estimated cost of the proposal is in excess of £6 million. In view of the high cost involved, a study was undertaken in 1986 on behalf of the local authority and the report on the study was made available to my Department. On the basis of the results of that study, the construction of a bridge at this location could not be justified on economic grounds. In the circumstances, an application for EC grant assistance would not be appropriate, having regard also to other priority road needs.
