Vol. 380 No. 4

Written Answers. - Castleknock (Dublin) School Proposal.

183.

asked the Minister for Education if she will clarify the up to date position in relation to the proposal for a second level school for Castleknock, Dublin 15; in particular, her views on the adequacy of the size of the remaining site at Beechpark left after the recent disposal of one and a half acres to Dublin County Council; whether demographic and birth rate studies of the general catchment area have been undertaken; if so, if they have been completed; if it is her intention to go ahead with a second level school in the Castleknock area on the proposed site; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The position regarding the proposal for a new second level school in Castleknock is that in July 1987 I took a decision to defer for the time being the provision of this school. My Department are currently carrying out a review of the proposal which is taking into account the most up to date statistical data available including demographic and birth rate trends. I expect this review to be completed shortly and I will take a decision on the proposal for a new school for Castleknock in the light of the review.

With regard to disposal of part of the site, I understand that Dublin County Council are at present negotiating with my Department with a view to acquiring a small portion of the Castleknock site for council planning purposes. I am assured by my professional staff that, in the event of these negotiations being successfully concluded, the remaining site will adequately provide for the needs of the new second level school if required.
