Vol. 380 No. 8

Written Answers. - National Genealogical Office.

45.

asked the Taoiseach when the National Genealogical Office will re-open; and the facilities which are available to the public in the meantime.

The Genealogical Office, which is a division of the National Library, is now open at its new premises at 2-3 Kildare Street where a State Heraldic Museum is located. The staff of the Genealogical Office can be met by appointment. Genealogical information is also available from Library staff in the Reading Room of the National Library. Access by the public to the records of the Genealogical Office is also available by appointment.

I have just recently established a task force to examine from a tourism development perspective the existing situation in the genealogy-"roots" area in this country and to recommend how the area should be developed further as an important tourism product in the Government's strategy to double tourism numbers. Part of the exercise will be to identify a positive role for the Genealogical Office.
