Vol. 380 No. 9

Written Answers. - Prisoner's Early Release.

32.

asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of the recent statements of northern churchmen that the British authorities should consider the release of prisoners who have served more than twelve years arising out of the troubles, he will likewise consider the early release of such prisoners in Portlaoise, County Laois, Limerick and Mountjoy women's prison, Dublin 9; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not aware of which specific statements the Deputy is referring to.

The cases of offenders serving lengthy terms of imprisonment are kept under review in the context of factors such as the circumstances of the offence, length of sentence served, behaviour while in custody and the previous record of the offender. An overriding concern in assessing suitability for release must be the risk to the community which could be posed by a release.
