Vol. 380 No. 9

Written Answers. - Vandalism to Second Level Schools.

50.

asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the alarming level of vandalism being experienced by second level school authorities in relation to their schools, in certain urban areas of this country; to the fact that in many cases the perpetrators of this vandalism are as young as 11 years of age; and if he has any special strategy to combat the problem.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that they are aware that incidents of vandalism to second-level schools have occurred in certain urban areas and that they give the matter as much attention as possible. Schools receive special attention from foot and mobile patrols and from other specialists units. In addition, crime prevention initiatives such as Neighbourhood Watch and Community Policing are being taken which are aimed at curbing unlawful activities like vandalism, including that relating to schools.
