Vol. 380 No. 10

Written Answers. - Mental Handicap Service.

156.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the problems suffered by the severely retarded children and adults in County Wexford; that great work is being done by DAWN to increase the awareness of such problems and to raise funds to provide proper and fully serviced accommodation; and that Wexford has a lower base than any other area; if he will provide funding specifically for this purpose; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the valuable work which is being carried out by DAWN and similar organisations throughout the country to assist in improving the lifestyle of handicapped people. The South Eastern Health Board are at present preparing an overall plan for the development of a comprehensive mental handicap service in the area. The question of providing funds for the development of services in Wexford will be considered in the context of the health board's plan and the availability of the necessary resources.

asked the Minister for Health when funds will be allocated to the group home bought by the Association of Parents and Friends for Handicapped Children at Murrough Avenue, Renmore, Galway, in April 1987, as the house is still unoccupied and five young adults are trained and ready to move in and children in urgent need of education are on a waiting list for same.

The scope for commissioning new units of accommodation is severely limited in the current financial circumstances. The question of commissioning the group home at Murrough Avenue, Renmore, Galway, will be considered in the context of the 1989 health allocation.
