Vol. 381 No. 1

Written Answers. - Thurles Sugar Factory.

17.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will make a statement outlining the plans in regard to the future of the Thurles sugar factory, County Tipperary.

When it approved, on 25 November 1987, a corporate plan for the five year period 1987-88 to 1991-92 the Board of Siúicre Éireann adopted the following resolution:

The Board is concerned about the future viability of sugar processing in Thurles in the long term.

In the light of the consequent threat to employment caused by the potential non-viability of the plant, the Board decided to secure an alternative industry for Thurles.

When this industry is identified the Board will then decide on the future of the Thurles sugar factory.
