Vol. 381 No. 1

Written Answers. - Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

39.

asked the Minister for Justice if he has any plans to amend the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, in order to change the two hour rule in regard to majority decisions in criminal prosecutions; and if he will make a statement on the matter in view of the recent court decision on this topic.

I had, a short time before the recent court decision referred to by the Deputy, asked the Committee on Court Practice and Procedure to examine and report to me on the need for the minimum period of deliberation by a jury provided for in section 25 (3) of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. No doubt, in their examination of the matter the committee will consider the implications of that decision.

Any recommendations made by the committee in due course will be considered in the normal way.
