Vol. 381 No. 1

Written Answers. - Consultant Staff in Galway Hospitals.

89.

asked the Minister for Health the number of consultant staff including (i) obstetricians, (ii) gynaecologists and (iii) paediatricians at each of the following hospitals: (a) Portiuncula Hospital, County Galway, (b) the Regional Hospital, Galway and (c) Merlin Park Hospital, Galway.

The most recent figures available to my Department are those taken at end 1987. At that date the consultant staffing of the selected hospitals was as follows:

(a) Portiuncula Hospital, County Galway Consultant obstetrician-gynaecologist three (of whom two were whole time permanent).

Consultant paediatrician two (both of whom were whole time permanent).

Total number of consultants 13 (of whom 12 were whole time permanent).

(b) Regional Hospital, Newcastle, Galway

Consultant obstetrician-gynaecologist four (all of whom were whole time permanent).

Consultant paediatrician four (of whom two were whole time permanent).

Total number of consultants 48 (of whom 42 were whole time permanent).

(c) Regional Hospital, Merlin Park, Galway

Total number of consultants 13 (of whom 11 were whole time permanent).

There are no posts of consultant obstetrician-gynaecologist or consultant paediatrician in Merlin Park.
