Vol. 381 No. 1

Written Answers. - St. Enda's Community School, Limerick.

99.

asked the Minister for Education in relation to St. Enda's community school, Kilmallock Road, Limerick, if her attention has been drawn to (a) the fact that currently some classes have only 24 hours learning time per week instead of the recommended 28 hours, (b) the urgent need for the appointment of an additional remedial teacher to this school as the September 1988 intake comprises 36 per cent remedial students to be accommodated in two groups of 24, when 16 is recognised as the limit for remedial class numbers with her Department and (c) the very low level of subject choice due to loss of staff; and if she will make provision to bring staff up to an adequate level.

Matters relating to the annual teacher allocation requirements of community schools are considered by my Department in consultation with the boards of management of these schools. My Department have no record of receiving data from the board of management of this school relating to the 1988 intake of remedial pupils. I would point out that the school currently has an ex-quota guidance and an ex-quota remedial teacher and that these ex-quota posts will remain in place for 1988-89.

The organisation of the school's curriculum is a matter for decision by the board of management having regard to the annual allocation of teaching staff authorised by my Department. It is hoped to notify the board of management shortly of their teacher allocation for 1988-89.
