Vol. 381 No. 3

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take No. 11.

It is also proposed that Votes 34 and 37, if not previously concluded, shall be brought to a conclusion at 12.30 p.m. and 2.30 p.m. respectively. Votes 38 and 39 shall be taken together for the purposes of debate and, if not previously concluded, shall be brought to a conclusion at 4.30 p.m. The proceedings, in each case, shall be brought to a conclusion by one question which shall be put from the Chair.

It is further proposed that, notwithstanding anything in Standing Orders, the following arrangements shall apply: the opening speech of the Ministers moving the Votes shall not exceed 20 minutes; the speech of any other Member shall not exceed 15 minutes; the Ministers moving the Votes shall be called on to conclude not later than 10 minutes before the stated times; if a division is challenged on any Estimate today, the taking of such division shall be postponed until 8.30 p.m. on Wednesday, 1 June 1988.

May I ask if the proposals in relation to dealing with No. 11 are agreed? Agreed.

May I ask the Taoiseach if either he or the Minister for Justice will be making a statement today on the purported infiltration of Garda Headquarters by a subversive organisation, a matter which must be taken very seriously.

That does not arise on the Order of Business.

Since the House is sitting and there is a matter for the Minister for Justice on the Order Paper today, surely the opportunity should be taken to make a statement. Are the Government taking this matter seriously?

I am proceeding to deal with Item No. 11, Estimates for the Public Service.

Maybe they have not heard about it yet.
