Vol. 381 No. 8

Written Answers. - State Bodies.

143.

asked the Minister for the Marine the names and functions of the commissions, committees, and State-sponsored bodies abolished by him during his term of office to date; and the names and functions of the commissions, committees and State-sponsored bodies set up by him or proposed to be set up by him since taking office.

I have not abolished any commission, committee or State-sponsored body during my term of office.

I have set up one such group as follows:

The Aquaculture Management Committee

This committee comprises representatives of the Department of the Marine, Roinn na Gaeltachta, An Bord Iascaigh Mhara and Údarás na Gaeltachta. Its terms of reference are:

To review on a regular basis the status of aquaculture development in relation to the objectives of the Government; to co-ordinate State funding for aquaculture projects in order to maximise employment and output; to consider the means necessary to secure adequate EEC funding for aquaculture and to review the provision of grant-aid for the aquaculture industry and to advise the Minister for the Marine and the Gaeltacht of any restructuring which is considered necessary.

I propose to set up a further four groups as follows:

1. The Marine Institute

The aim in establishing the institute is to bring together, under one statutory authority, all the resources of the State which are currently allocated to marine research, and to co-ordinate the activities of agencies involved in marine research.

2. The Aquaculture Advisory Committee

This committee is intended, when established, to represent all facets of the aquaculture industry. Its purpose will be to advise me on all aspects of aquaculture development in addition to formalising and rendering more efficient present consultation procedures in the industry.

3. The Shipping Advisory Committee

The functions of this committee are to advise me on developing the Irish shipping industry including the cost effectiveness of re-establishing a deep-sea fleet.

4. Dún Laoghaire Planning Review Group

This group will ensure that the long term as well as the short term options for the development of the harbour are examined and planned.
