Vol. 381 No. 8

Written Answers. - Grant-aided Organisations.

230.

asked the Minister for Education in respect of each organisation to be grant-aided as recently announced by her from moneys provided by the national lottery: (a) the total number of adult members; (b) the total number of youth members; (c) the length of time the organisation has been in existence; (d) whether the organisation has previously received funds from national lottery sources and (e) the amount of local contribution to be made in respect of the project.

I assume the Deputy is referring to the allocation of lottery funds to help disadvantaged youth announced by me on 5 May 1988. In this instance, grants were made available to voluntary and statutory bodies providing essential services to young people most in need, for example, the young homeless, substance abusers, young people in trouble with the law or young people from economically and socially deprived backgrounds. Allocations were made for new projects on the basis of need and not on the basis of adult or youth membership, the length of time the organisation had been in existence, whether it had previously received funds from the national lottery or its ability to provide a local contribution.

231.

asked the Minister for Education whether any of the grants sanctioned for payment from moneys provided by the national lottery are (a) in respect of specific projects or (b) arising from an application from the organisation to be grant-aided; if so, the details in each case; and the reasons for choosing such organisations.

All grants allocated by my Department from the proceeds of the national lottery towards the development of youth and sport are in respect of specific projects or arising from an application from the organisation to be grant aided under specific schemes of assistance. Applicant organisations or groups must comply with the conditions of the relevant schemes in order to qualify for grants.

I am not prepared to authorise the compilation of the detailed information requested by the Deputy as it would divert staff to an unacceptable extent from essential duties associated with the administration of the various schemes. Should the Deputy require information in relation to any individual project, however, this can be readily supplied.
