Vol. 381 No. 8

Written Answers. - Sewage Discharges into Dublin Bay.

20.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the public concern at the impact on the environment of the continuing discharge into Dublin Bay of untreated sewage; if his Department intend to take any measures to have this practice stopped; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I fully share the concern which has been expressed in recent times at certain sewage discharges to Dublin Bay and a programme of action to remedy the situation has been put in place. Amongst other measures I approved, in July, 1987 Dún Laoghaire Corporation's proposals for a marine pipeline to convey sewage from Dún Laoghaire to Ringsend treatment works. Contract documents for the works were received in my Department on 23 May last and are now being urgently examined.

The condition of Dublin Bay is being regularly monitored by the local authorities and a water quality management plan for the area is being prepared to provide a better framework for decisions on the controls to be applied in relation to wastes entering the bay, including decisions on the treatment and disposal of sewage. I, for my part, will continue to take whatever action is necessary to protect, and enhance where possible, this invaluable amenity.
