Vol. 381 No. 8

Written Answers. - State Bodies.

80.

asked the Minister for Justice the names and functions of the commissions, committees and State-sponsored bodies abolished by him during his term of office to date; and the names and functions of the commissions, committees and State-sponsored bodies set up by him or proposed to be set up by him since taking office.

No commission, committee or State-sponsored body under the aegis of my Department has been abolished since I took office.

The details requested in relation to the bodies under the aegis of my Department which were set up since I took office are as follows:

1. The Garda Advisory Group

This body was established to act as a source of advice to me on Garda management and other Garda matters in relation to which professional skills and expertise, drawn from outside the Force, can be expected to be of particular value.

2. The Garda Síochána Complaints Appeals Board

The functions of the Appeal Board are set out in the Garda Síochána (Complaints) Act, 1986.

The Data Protection Bill, 1987, which is at present awaiting Committee Stage in the House, proposes that a data protection commissioner be appointed whose function it will be to supervise the implementation of the legislation.
