Vol. 381 No. 8

Written Answers. - Nuclear Damage.

111.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food in view of the damage caused to the Irish food industry by recent nuclear accidents, if he will consider putting a proposal to the Council of Ministers insisting that the offending nation be obliged to compensate for the damage caused.

It is presumed that the Deputy is referring to the Chernobyl nuclear accident. The position is that there is not evidence to suggest that the nuclear accident caused damage to the Irish food industry. In the circumstances, while I will continue to keep the situation under review, I do not intend at this stage to raise this issue at the Council of Ministers.
