Vol. 381 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Draft Vredeling Directive.

12.

asked the Minister for Labour if Ireland's position in relation to the draft Vredeling directive as amended by the Redmond proposals, has been altered; if not, if he will confirm that Ireland will support the draft directive when it next comes before the Council of Social Affairs Ministers; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

At the Council of Social Affairs Ministers meeting on 5 June 1986 a resolution was adopted deferring furthere consideration of the draft Vredeling Directive until 1989 at the earliest. The Council resolution was clarified in July 1986 to allow that when consideration of this matter is resumed it will be on the basis of either the draft previously submitted by the Commission or of any alternative proposal which the Commission might choose to put forward.

It is accordingly for the Commission in the first place to consider all of the proposals to date, including that of the Redmond Ad Hoc Working Group, and to decide whether or not to incorporate them into the draft Directive for resubmission to the Council at a future date. Vice-President Marine during a visit to Dublin in recent weeks stated that a new draft Directive relating to information and consultation of workers about the introduction of new technologies was being considered by the Commission.

Ireland's position in relation to any new proposals for information and consultation of workers emanating from the Commission will be determined when the text of such a proposal has been examined and evaluated.
