As with most species of wildlife, a critical factor in the maintenance of populations is the preservation of habitat and this is particularly so in the case of grouse. As regards the conservation of habitats the overall objective is to create a network of nature reserves which is representative of all habitat types. Every effort is being made to conserve the grouse species having regard to the resources available.
There are no proposals under consideration in my Department for the importation of grouse.
As already stated, in my reply to the Deputy on 17 May last, I do not propose to restore financial aid to registered gun clubs for game development.
