Vol. 382 No. 9

Written Answers. - Teacher's Pension.

189.

asked the Minister for Education if she will arrange to have the retired teacher's pension of a person (details supplied) in County Clare reviewed with a view to granting a substantial increase having regard to this person's circumstances.

The award of pensions and other superannuation benefits in respect of national school teachers is governed by statutory superannuation schemes made under the Teachers' Superannuation Act, 1928. Various amending schemes have been made over the years and a number of approved changes are currently being implemented administratively pending their incorporation into further amending schemes for approval by the Oireachtas. The provisions of the schemes are of general application and cannot be departed from in individual cases.

This former teacher retired on grounds of ill-health on 18 October, 1976 and was awarded a pension and retirement gratuity based on his pensionable service and his retiring pensionable salary. I am satisfied that his superannuation award is correct and fully in accordance with the provisions of the schemes and represents his maximum entitlements under those schemes.

An arrangement now exists whereby teachers who are awarded a disability pension are credited with added years of service in addition to their years of actual pensionable service. This provision applies only to teachers who retire on or after 30 June, 1977 and does not apply in the case of this teacher as he retired on 18 October, 1976.
