Vol. 382 No. 9

Written Answers. - Alarm System Installation.

52.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will sanction the installation of an alarm system between the Garda station in Wexford town and the home of a person (details supplied) in County Wexford who is suffering from extreme anxiety because of her perceived vulnerability to burglary or personal attack.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that it is not the policy to agree to the provision of alarm systems linking the houses of individuals with Garda stations. The gardaí, with the very heavy demands already being made on their resources, could not undertake the additional workload which would be involved in servicing a system of this nature. There is already serious Garda concern at the waste of their time which is involved in responding to the very high number of "false alarms", in all areas, from existing alarm systems.

I would suggest that the concern underlying this question might be met by means of the Garda neighbourhood watch scheme or some variation of it which would meet the particular needs of the person in question. I understand that the question of setting up such a scheme in the area concerned is under consideration at present.
