Vol. 382 No. 10

Written Answers. - Irish Exported Meats Single Brand Name.

32.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he intends to take any steps to encourage or facilitate the introduction of a single brand name for Irish meat sold abroad; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The question of whether it would be advantageous to introduce a single brand name for Irish meat sold abroad is primarily one for the meat export trade in consultation with Coras Beostoic agus Feola; the latter already have responsibility for beef and sheepmeat promotion and would, under the Coras Beostoic agus Feola (Amendment) Bill 1988 now before the Oireachtas, have responsibility for pigmeat promotion also. The introduction of a single brand name would be a complex matter involving detailed consultations with the trade and observance of the strict conditions of EC regulations.
