Vol. 383 No. 1

Written Answers. - Carysfort (County Dublin) National School.

344.

asked the Minister for Education if she will appoint an extra teacher to Carysfort national school, Blackrock, County Dublin, for the year 1988-89 in view of the special circumstances of the closure of Carysfort College which has resulted in the loss of two teachers in this school this year.

Having examined the circumstances of the case I am satisfied that there are no grounds for the appointment of an extra teacher in this school.

Enrolment on 30 September 1987 was 244, which warrants a staff of Principal and six Assistants (plus of course the shared remedial post which is not affected by schedules or enrolments).

Although there has been a small increase in this year's enrolment it is not sufficient to warrant an additional teacher. Under the agreement which was reached with the Government and the unions under the Programme for National Recovery, the scheduled figure for the appointment of a 7th assistant is 252 but, in order to allow a departure from the normal staffing arrangements, the school would have to be in a developing situation, i.e. with a minimum 36 pupils over last year's figures. The Department is satisfied that the present enrolment can be catered for by the authorised staff and that there should not be any difficulty in organising classes.
