Vol. 383 No. 3

Written Answers. - Dublin Health Centre. Dentists/Orthodontists.

128.

asked the Minister for Health the number of dentists and orthodontists currently available through the Eastern Health Board in the North Strand health centre, Dublin 1; the number of children awaiting treatment there; if he has satisfied himself with this situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There were two full-time dentists working in the North Strand health centre up to the end of January 1988 when one resigned. The other dentist continued working at the health centre until going on sick leave on 5 October 1988. It is unlikely that this dentist will be fit to resume work before Christmas. The health board made several efforts to secure a temporary replacement when the first dentist left but were unsuccessful. The board have now secured the services of another dentist for the North Strand health centre but he can attend for only three sessions per week. The principal dental surgeon for the area also attends the North Strand health centre every Friday and provides minor orthodontic treatments. The health board are continuing in their endeavours to recruit full-time dentists through the Local Appointments Commission who recently advertised five posts. A full-time dentist will be assigned to the North Strand health centre as soon as one becomes available. At present there are approximately 600 children awaiting dental screening/treatment at the North Strand health centre.
