Vol. 383 No. 4

Written Answers. - Heating of Local Authority Dwellings.

125.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make a statement regarding the use of a type of heaters (details supplied) in local authority dwellings; his assessment of these units; the areas where these units have been installed in Dublin city and county; the applications he has received from the Dublin local authorities for funds for the replacement thereof; and the present position regarding such applications.

The assessment of the suitability of particular heating systems in their rented dwellings is a matter for local authorities. A proposal for assistance under the Department's remedial works scheme may include the replacement of such a system where the authority consider it necessary. The information requested on the extent to which the heating system mentioned has been installed in the Dublin area is not available in the Department. To date, however, applications for funding under the remedial works scheme which include the replacement of the system have been received in respect of certain local authority houses in Darndale and Ballybrack. Work is in progress in both estates.
